Project Scope

The initial scope of the project is to supply wireless access to over 179 classrooms and other student study areas on campus.  As classrooms are completed, adjacent offices and labs that are identified as having an immediate need for wireless will also be addressed. Other requests for wireless  will be fit into the schedule as needs are identified.

Areas of coverage will be marked (where allowed) by placard as a “UABwifi Zone.” In addition, a web based map showing coverage areas will be kept updated as work progresses.

Additional Security

The campus VPN may also be used to add an additional layer of security if needed. (See: www.uab.edu/vpn),

We are currently working on a plan to migrate the UABwifi network to an 802.1x form of authentication. Dynamic WEP keys or certs will provide an additional level of security. We are looking at a number of Radius packages to find one that will work with the lowest impact on the end user yet provide the highest level of security. This system will be thoroughly tested before put into place.
