Portal services are distinguished from others in that their goal is to provide information and resources which are specifically tailored to each individual based on their preferences and association with the university.

As an example, if a student views a portal Web site, it could be customized to include their schedule of classes, tuition deadlines, upcoming sporting events, computer lab hours, and so on. On the other hand, they specifically would not receive any links or notices which were meaningful only to UAB faculty and staff.

The BlazerNET Web portal provides this capability to all UAB employees and students, while the eReporter provides a weekly e-mail distribution of news by and for the UAB employee community, which is planned to soon include targeted information for each recipient.
