Information Delivery Overview

One of the most important functions for the IT organization is its provision of information delivery mechanisms which can be utilized by UAB departments, faculty, researchers, staff, and other authorized parties.

Because each item of information has a different criteria for how and to whom it should be distributed, IT supports a number of services which can be used to accomplish its delivery.

List Services are most often used where a defined, static audience of information recipients can be identified in advance. The audience can be determined through self-subscription, or a list owner can add and remove recipients. Options are available to specify whether the lists operate as a one-way distribution outlet, or if all members of the list can post as a virtual discussion community.

Dynamic Services are most often used for one-way information delivery to audiences whose composition may change from day or day, or even more often. Rather than relying upon statically defined memberships, each use of these services constructs its list of recipients in real-time.

Portal Services are mechanisms for providing individually tailored information presentation and access, based on users' relationship to the university, and their preferences.

Collaborative Services allow the creation of virtual communities of interest which can share information in many formats and dimensions.

Internet Services provide campus access to standard Internet facilities for discussion and information exchange.
