|
1 |
E-mail standards
(see: http://www.dpo.uab.edu/Email/
for complete Guidelines) |
(A) Email provided centrally by DPO - "Central Solution" (Netscape, Eudora) (B) Email provided by a simple, local department mail server - "Simple Local Solution" (Pegasus; cc:Mail) (C) Email provided by a proprietary mail system which provides integrated directory, dial-in, fax and other services - "Comprehensive Local Solution" (Microsoft Exchange-widely in use, and Novell GroupWise - used within HIS/HSF) |
|
2 |
Word processor, spreadsheet and other software standards |
We recommend Microsoft Office which includes Microsoft WORD (word processing), EXCEL (spreadsheet), and POWERPOINT (presentation) and ACCESS (database; note that ACCESS is not available for Mac’s). This is also the standard set by Health Information Services (HIS/HSF) for the UAB Hospital and Health Services Foundation. |
|
3 |
Single electronic name/e-mail directory |
A web accessible directory based on information from HURS, STARS, and Walker College can be found at: http://www.dpo.uab.edu/ and click Phonebook button. Each user can enter a name in the form: elliotl@uab.edu and e-mail will be forwarded to them. At this time, there is no good way to integrate this information with local Netware directories; Microsoft Exchange directories; or Novell GroupWise directories. |

4 |
LAN Manager – job description, qualifications |

Remote Access (Dial-in) |
CampusMCI program, arranged with MCI, provides remote access for faculty, staff, students, and alumni at reasonable rates, billed to either home or UAB department. Details available here. |
|

Pages for individuals are available for those registered in the electronic phonebook AND with an account at DPO. |
|
8 |
Technical Support Services |
Raising awareness of the need to support hardware and software with technical support staff to install, configure, fix, and train others. |
|
9 |
Network Financing |
Initial discussion of alternative models for supporting cost of the campus network; currently funded principally by a telephone surcharge. |
|

IAIMS (Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems) Advisory Committee |
CISCnet serves as the Infrastructure & Core Services Committee for IAIMS, a strategic planning process being organized by Scott Plutchak, Director of Lister Hill Library: http://www.uab.edu/iaims/ |

Internet2 – the next generation internet and increasing UAB network capacity |
A grant will be submitted from UAB to the National Science Foundation for funding to connect UAB via a very high speed link to a national research network backbone operating 40-100 times faster than the current internet. See http://www.uab.edu/internet2/ for further information about this initiative. |
